NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. A second-period power play goal by defenceman Ken
Morin eventually proved to be the game-winner as McGill skated to a 2-1 victory
over Merrimack College in mens university preseason hockey at North Andover,
Mass., Saturday
The Warriors outshot McGill 33-17 but Redmen rookie netminder Hubert Morin
of St. Georges de Beauce, Que., made 32 saves for the victory.
Morin, a senior from St. Prosper, Que., converted a pair of crisp passes from
Sam Bloom and Simon Marcotte-Legare only 4:49 into the middle stanza to give
the Redmen a 2-0 lead over Merrimack, an NCAA Division 1 squad which plays in
the 10-team Hockey East conference.
Francis Verreault-Paul, a freshman from Masheteviatsh, Que., had given the
Redmen a 1-0 lead in the opening period with his first career goal in his debut
as a member of the Redmen. Verreault-Paul, a 5-foot-9, 169-pound centre who
had been scratched from the lineup in each of McGills first four preseason
contests, did not appear to think he would be suiting up for the game. He forgot
to pack his No.9 game jersey for the two-day road trip and ended-up wearing
No. 30, which belonged to non-dressing netminder Jake Jarvis.
Merrimack, which fell to 0-1-0, tied the score at 1-1 when sophomore Chris
Barton of Calgary, connected on a power play midway through the second period.
The Warriors are now 1-1-0 lifetime against McGill, having won 3-1 in their
only previous meeting, on Oct. 13, 1995.
The Redmen, 2-3-0 overall, will play their final non-conference contest before
an expected sell-out crowd at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Sunday
at 4 p.m. It will mark McGills second lifetime meeting against the Catamounts,
who finished third in the Hockey East standings last year. The first matchup
was a 3-2 Redmen victory back on Dec. 30, 1978.
McGill opens defence of their Queens Cup league title on Oct. 10, when
they host the Concordia Stingers at McConnell Arena.
REDMEN RAP: Among the faces in the crowd to see McGill defeat Merrimack were
Marc Lajeunesse, Brent Bannerman, Joel Sitak and Chris Hobson, all former teammates
of head coach Martin Raymond, when he played for the Red & White from 1986
to 1991.
