Redmen 1 - Concordia 2

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

Bees rumble as Redmen stumble in season opener

MONTREAL – Rookie Nicolas D’Aoust of Lorraine, Que., scored with 3:02 remaining in regulation time as Concordia skated to a 2-1 victory to ruin McGill’s 133rd season opener before 461 at McConnell Arena, Friday.

In the process, the Stingers snapped a nine-game losing streak at McConnell Arena, dating back to their last conquest on McGill ice, a 3-1 decision on Nov. 9, 2004.

The cross-town rivals battled through a scoreless first period before Montreal native Mike Baslyk converted a pass from D’Aoust on a power-play to give the Stingers a 1-0 lead at 8:08 of the middle stanza.

McGill, which iced a lineup featuring eight freshmen, tied the game in the final period when Simon Marcotte-Légaré potted a power-play marker at 13:16 of the final period.

The Stingers (1-0) will host Carleton on Saturday at 5 p.m., while the Redmen (0-1) will travel to the nation’s capital to play the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who have dropped their first two league games.

REDMEN RAP: McGill head coach Martin Raymond named his new captains this week…Seniors Eric L’Italien of Ste. Foy, Que., and Ken Morin were named as co-captains, the first time that McGill will have co-captains since 1986-87 when Mike Babcock and Mark Reade shared the captaincy… Babcock, who guided the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup last spring, is the featured cover story on The McGill News, an alumni quarterly magazine that will be out this week… Coach Raymond is now 8-4-1 lifetime in OUA regular-season openers. He also owns a 38-36-9 record against the Stingers… The Stingers and Redmen have now hooked up 174 times, with Concordia holding an 89-71-14 record in those head-to-head confrontations but the Redmen have a 39-38-8 record against them at McConnell Arena.
