Redmen 3 - Ottawa 4

Game Report by Earl Zukerman

McDonald fries Redmen in nation’s capital
---------------------------------------------------------

OTTAWA – Dan McDonald of New Liskeard, Ont., scored four points and Ryne Gove of Cornwall snapped a 3-3 score at 17:07 of the third period and added a pair of assists as the Ottawa Gee-Gees edged McGill 4-3 in men’s university hockey, Saturday.

Sam Bloom of Toronto opened the scoring for McGill only 89 seconds after the puck dropped but Hull, Que., native Yanick Charron beat Redmen rookie netminder Danny Mireault on the power play at 12:16.

Mireault had not been penciled in to start but was an emergency fill-in for rookie netminder Hubert Morin, who left the pre-game warm-up midway through the session with dull skate blades. In the absence of long-time equipment manager Earl Hawke, head coach Martin Raymond intervened and helped sharpen the skates before the game but freshman Danny Mireault was handed the start between the pipes. Morin took over from Mireault at the start of the second period and went the rest of the way without further incident.

McDonald, a senior centre, put the Gee-Gees ahead 2-1 at 18:10 of the opening period. It was his first of two markers on the night and he also added a couple of helpers to finish the soiree with four points.

McGill rallied to go ahead 3-2 on goals by freshmen Alex Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., and Marc-Andre Dorion, a defenceman from St. Hubert, Que., at 16:26 of the middle period and 14:15 of the third, respectively.

McDonald tied the score on the power play at 15:38, and then set up the winner by Gove less than two minutes later.
The Redmen went 0-for-5 on the power play and were outshot 39-27, including a 19-11 margin in the final period.

McGill (0-2) will make a return trip to the nation’s capital next Saturday for an afternoon affair at Carleton (2-1) on Oct. 18.

REDMEN RAP: Among the Redmen lineup scratches, was senior rearguard Yan Turcotte, who was serving an automatic one-game suspension for incurring a check-from-behind major against Concordia the previous night… Also out was co-captain Eric L’Italien (family matter) and third-year centre Benoit Arsenault, who missed his fourth straight game since suffering an eye injury in a pre-season contest at Waterloo, Sept. 27… With a career record of 44-55-99 in 153 career contests, the speedy L’Italien needs one more point to reach the 100-point plateau over his McGill career.
