The host University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds opened the sixth annual UNB
Varsity Reds Fall Classic tournament, a challenge cup two-game format against
the McGill Redmen, with a match that was all offence with “last goal wins”
and a 7-6 victory for UNB.
This was the first time UNB and McGill have met on the ice since Sept. 30,
2005, which was also at the Fall Classic.
McGill shocked the fans at the Aitken University Centre when they won the opening
faceoff and Francis Verreault-Paul (Mashteuiatsh, QC) split the defence as he
streaked into the UNB zone and scored on the breakaway on Travis Fullerton (Riverview,
NB) just 13 seconds into the game.
McGill doubled their score on their next shot on net at 4:40 as Evan Vossen
(Swift Current, SK) and Simon Marcotte-Légaré (Longueuil, QC)
worked a nice play on the rush. UNB upped the tempo after that and were rewarded
when Lachlan MacIntosh (Perth-Andover, NB) banged in his own rebound from Luke
Gallant's (Bedford, NS) point shot at 8:47.
A few minutes later UNB's first powerplay was textbook, as every V-Red touched
the puck before it quickly ended up on MacIntosh's stick in the slot, and he
beat McGill netminder Danny Mireault (Notre Dame des Prairies, QC) over the
shoulder in the top corner at 11:51. Shots in the first period were 14-8 in
favour of UNB.
In the second period McGill was in penalty trouble early, as Alexandre Picard-Hooper
(Boucherville, QC) got caught slashing 3 seconds in, and a too many men on the
ice penalty 33 seconds later put the Redmen two men down. With lots of room,
it was UNB captain Kyle Bailey (Ponoka, AB) coming through the slot to make
the quick one-timer past Mireault.
UNB got into penalty trouble a few minutes later, but it was MacIntosh picking
up the shorthand goal to complete the hat trick at 4:05 after rookie Chris Culligan
(Howie Center, NS) won the faceoff clean in the McGill zone. Mireault obviously
didn't see the shot coming through a screening crowd.
However, McGill bounced back on the same powerplay when Guilliame Doucet (Anjou,
QC) got Fullerton going across the net and put the puck in the far corner.
Ten minutes later defenceman Gallant handed Doucet a gift puck giveaway in
the slot, and he surprised Fullerton with his quick shot. UNB restored their
lead at 17:15 when Dion Campbell (Melville, SK) made the play of the game as
he flew down the right side of the ice before making a power move to the net
and beating Mireault glove side. Shots in the period were 14-3 for the Varsity
Reds over the Redmen.
In the third period UNB was on the powerplay at 7:24 when Bailey was in the
high slot and scored a bullet goal after some nice puck movement by his teammates.
UNB was back on the powerplay a couple of minutes later, but got sloppy and
allowed Maxime Langelier-Parent (Levy, QC) to enter the UNB zone alongside a
UNB defenceman, and drive the net and push the puck past Fullerton’s attempted
poke check with only one hand on his stick at 11:52.
The Varsity Reds got the goal back later in the powerplay when Gallant hammered
the puck from the point, only to see it deflect to Hunter Tremblay (Timmins,
ON) at the side of the net for the easy tap in. UNB controlled most of the play
in the period, but still, they allowed McGill to walk out of the corner in the
offensive zone and Picard Hooper put the puck past Fullerton.
In the last minute McGill had some great scoring chances with their extra attacker,
but couldn't tie the game and it finished 7-6 for UNB. Shots favoured the Varsity
Reds 14-7 in the period and 42-18 in the game. Players of the game were Doucet
for McGill and MacIntosh for UNB.
