V-Reds win 6th annual UNB Varsity Reds Fall Classic

The host University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds won the sixth annual UNB Varsity Reds Fall Classic tournament, this year in a challenge cup two-game format against the McGill Redmen. It was a complete contrast in games – Friday, Sept. 25, the match was all offence with “last goal wins” and a 7-6 victory for UNB while Saturday UNB was back in a tighter defensive form as they dominated McGill 5-1 to win the cup.

This was the first time UNB and McGill have met on the ice since Sept. 30, 2005, which was also at the Fall Classic.

On Saturday, UNB was back to their normal form and denying the Redmen many scoring chances. UNB defenceman Jonathan Harty (Oromocto, NB) got the scoring going at 7:53 with his blast past Hubert Morin (St-Georges-de-Beauce, QC). That was the only scoring in the period, although UNB netminder Derek Yeomans (St. Albert, AB) made a great save on Patrick Belzile (St-Eloi, QC) around the 16:30 mark. Shots favoured UNB 12-4 in the period.

In the second period UNB’s Luke Lynes scored two goals on powerplays, early at 1:26 and then again at 12:25 against Danny Mireault, who switched off with Morin midway through the game.

Harty, who had been having a great game, picked up a checking from behind minor penalty and automatic game misconduct at 14:52 while killing a penalty. There was a neutral ice skirmish late in the period, that saw McGill’s Picard Hooper and captain Yan Turcotte (Laval, QC) get involved with UNB’s Ryan Seymour (Fredericton, NB) and Dion Campbell. All four were given roughing penalties and dodged fighting majors.

UNB added two more goals in the third period, while playing a dominating forecheck. Hunter Tremblay tipped a Josh Hepditch (Fredericton, NB) point shot at 1:19 and John Scott Dickson (Barrie, ON) muscled in a rebound from the blue paint on the powerplay at 17:36.

The only blemish in the period came with just 25 seconds to go, when McGill's Parent was left all alone at side of Yeoman's net, the puck came to him and Parent quickly wristed the puck into the top corner.

Final shots were 38-14 in favour of UNB, and 11-4 in the final period. Players of the game were Picard-Hooper for McGill and Tremblay for UNB.

At the conclusion of the game, the UNB Varsity Reds Fall Classic Cup trophy was handed to UNB captain Kyle Bailey. McGill player of the tournament honours went to Guilliaume Doucet. The tournament top defenceman was UNB’s Bretton Stamler (Edmonton, AB) and top forward went to UNB’s Kyle Bailey. The tournament MVP was UNB’s Lachlan MacIntosh.
