Hawks throw surprise attack, upset Redmen in Waterloo
Nov. 13, 2009
WATERLOO, Ont. - The No.9-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks got the better
of fourth-ranked McGill to the tune of 8-4, handing the visitors their first
loss of the season.
Laurier's head coach Kelly Nobes was serving the first of a two game suspension
handed down by the league for a gross misconduct assessed last week after arguing
with a referee at Lakehead.
The purple and gold's Clinton Pettapiece of Christina Lake, B.C., opened the
scoring midway through the first period and Craig Voakes from St. Thomas, Ont.,
followed that up less than a minute later to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.
Hawk captain Jean-Michel Rizk of Dunham, Que., put Laurier ahead by three with
a goal just 15 seconds into the second period and Chad Kennedy of Mississauga,
Ont., scored a shorthanded marker at 1:54 to really set the visitors on their
heels.
The Redmen fought back, however, with goals from Marc-Andre Daneau of Aston
Jonction, Que., and rookie Jean-Francois Boisvert of Mirabel, Que. But Mike
Gauthier of North Vancouver, B.C., replied for the Hawks to give the home team
a 5-2 lead by the end of the second frame.
WLU added three more goals in the final stanza to put the Hawks ahead 8-2 before
the Redmen countered with markers from Marc-Andre Dorion of St. Hubert, Que.,
and Boisvert's second of the night with less than three minutes remaining.
Goaltender Hubert Morin of St. Georges de Beauce, Que., started for McGill
and was beaten four times on 14 shots before being replaced at the 23-minute
mark by Hunter Shaw, a freshman from Penticton, B.C., who turned aside 14 of
18 shots and was saddled with the loss. Laurier netminder Jeff MacDougald of
Shallow Lake, Ont., stopped 39 of 43 shots for the victory.
McGill went 1-for-8 with the man-advantage while Laurier was good on one of
seven chances. The game featured 122 penalty minutes with 60 PIMs assessed to
the visitors.
Laurier will now host UQTR on Saturday, while McGill travels across town to
play the Waterloo Warriors.
